Keith LaMar/Bomani's Reflection:
Malcolm X
The Autobiography of Malcolm X was the first serious book I read, the book that put me on the path of self-discovery. Like most young black men who grow up in the ghetto, I was ignorant of so much having to do with my purpose and worth. It was my encounter with Malcolm's story that opened my eyes and offered me a way out of the mental and spiritual misery that I born into. Reading his story gave me the keys to my freedom. He was the reason I knew not to take the "easy way" out of my troubles, to face them head on and allow experience to introduce me to my myself. I spent 333 hours working on this canvas, trying to capture the beauty and depth of what his example meant (and means) to me. The quality of the print captures the texture of the actual canvas and will allow you to see every stroke of the brush, every little detail that went into rendering him as he was (and remains) in my heart and mind.
Long live Malcolm X!
With love and love from
Keith LaMar
