Keith LaMar/Bomani's Reflection:

Tupac Shakur

When I arrived on death row, I was deeply distraught and full of rage. At the time, I hadn't yet discovered the music of Tupac Shakur. He'd just been murdered and I kept hearing snippets about how significant he was, how deep and enduring his contribution was. A guy on the pod with me happened to be a big fan and had his entire body of work, which he let me borrow. For months I listened to his lyrics and took in the cadence of his delivery, finding meaning in his journey. Tupac was a deep dude, was brought up in the militant vein of the Black Panther Party, and was well-read and versed on the political and economic reality of society. But more than the breadth and depth of his wordplay, he understood the meaning of pain and could see with a clarity that defied his age the planned misery that awaited black people in America. I never cried so much in those dark days of my life, listening to "Dear Mama" and slowing coming into the realization that his death and my life was the same, and that I, too, may meet with an untimely death which, in the meantime, I had every obligation to channel my rage in order to overcome. I spent 234 hours with Tupac, listening to his music, reading his poetry, and letting it all pour into the canvas.

Long live Tupac Shakur!
