Keith LaMar/Bomani's Reflection:

Miles Davis

I seem to have an affinity for tortured souls, and Miles Davis was most definitely that. I think my first encounter with Miles was his album Kind of Blue, a seminal work that marked what is known as his modal period. Unlike the brutal upbringings of those with whom he played, Miles didn't grow up in the ghetto. His family had means, money, which gave him a somewhat different lens through which to see life. And yet, somehow, through osmosis, he absorbed the brutality and pain that came with living in a racist society, and it informed, in a very deep way, his art and music. He, to his discredit, became a very brutal person in some respects, which is to say, he was no angel. In fact, for a time, he was referred to as the Prince of Darkness. This painting is an attempt to capture the younger Miles, fresh out of Julliard, when he was the most hopeful and alert, and eager to learn. He was a beautiful young man then; this, before all the drugs and ravages of racism. I wanted to remember him in this way--not innocent but pure, while he was still on his way to becoming. . . I spent 167 hours on this canvas, listening to Sketches of Spain, Kind of Blue (and reading the book by the same name, written by Ashley Kahn). I love Miles, probably because I understand what it means to be broken. Still, there's so much beauty in his reach; and the pain, too, is exquisite, as only Miles can capture.

Long live Miles Davis!
